If you have never had a well-woman exam—or it has been a while—it is normal to feel uncertain. At Westlight Medical Group in Anaheim, Dr. Divneet Wadhwa provides a private, respectful setting for your annual well-woman visit. The exact services are personalized according to your age, history, symptoms, risk factors, and goals.

What Is a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam is a preventive visit focused on reproductive health, hormonal health, recommended screenings, and overall well-being. Many health plans cover eligible preventive care without cost-sharing, although benefits vary. A Pap test, pelvic exam, breast exam, and STI screening are not automatically required at every visit; Dr. Wadhwa will explain what is appropriate for you.

Step-by-Step: What Happens at Your Well-Woman Exam

  1. Health-history review. Discuss your menstrual cycle, sexual and reproductive health, medications, family history, and concerns confidentially.
  2. Vital signs and general examination. Blood pressure and other measurements are taken, with physical examination based on your needs.
  3. Pelvic examination or cervical screening when indicated. The need for an examination or test depends on age, symptoms, history, and screening schedule.
  4. STI screening. Testing may be offered based on age, history, symptoms, and risk factors.
  5. Contraceptive and reproductive counseling. Discuss starting, changing, or stopping birth control, including an IUD.
  6. Laboratory work when indicated. Thyroid, iron, cholesterol, glucose, or other testing may be ordered according to your health needs.

Do I Need a Pap Smear Every Year?

No. Screening frequency depends on age, the test used, prior results, and risk factors. Current HRSA-supported guidance recommends cervical cancer screening for average-risk women ages 21 to 65, while the American Cancer Society recommends beginning average-risk screening at age 25. Dr. Wadhwa will recommend a schedule appropriate for you. Annual preventive visits remain useful even when cervical screening is not due.

How to Prepare for Your Well-Woman Exam

Bring your medication list, relevant records, insurance information, and questions. If cervical screening is planned, ask the office whether menstruation, vaginal products, intercourse, or medications affect preparation. Do not delay evaluation of pain, unusual bleeding, discharge, or another concern simply because you are menstruating.
